Close to you...

Bit of a different one today, straying away from the brand a bit

You don't post often enough to have a brand - You

Picture

Seriously, that's how you sound.

I was listening to Close to you by The Carpenters recently and was struck by the bizarre nature of the lyrics:

Why do birds, suddenly appear,
Every time, you are near
Just like me, they long to be,
Close to you

If birds suddenly appear, chances are that they were already there anyway, just hiding in the trees or something.

Also, the song is probably referring to more romantic birds such as robins or doves, but let's face it, in the real world it would probably be pigeons.

But pigeons are genetically indistinguishable from doves - You

I know, but that undermines my point.

It was then pointed out to me that birds don't suddenly appear; that's stars!

And that raises its own problem, namely that stars can't suddenly appear. There are two possible issues, depending on the context of when the song is being sung:

Option 1: The song is being sung in the night - Stars can appear, technically, but that's extremely rare.

Actually it's about a billion per year - You

Don't make me break the fourth wall and stop you fact checking me.

The fact is, there's already so many stars that most people aren't going to notice a few more, much less write a song about it.

Option 2: The song is being sung in the day - Stars theoretically could appear from nowhere, but you're unlikely to notice them because of the star nearest to us, Sol (better known as the Sun), which makes other stars virtually invisible.

But returning to the birds, although they don't suddenly appear, they do fall down from the sky.

As Elton John explained, birds don't even do that when they die!
