Goes Wrong Along

Check out my previous two Lockdown Blog Posts, how to get your theatre fix and lockdown musical fix.

UPDATE: I have published another post, this time detailing statistics about TGWS such as who got hit the most times and how many times the set broke.

But this post isn't about them. This post is about what Mischief Theatre have been doing to combat the cabin fever (why do I keep thinking of that song? I've never even seen it!) On April 6th, Mischief announced that they were closing some of their productions.

Fortunately, in early 2020 they released their TV series The Goes Wrong Show (Henceforth TGWS). The premise is similar to that of The Play That Goes Wrong (TPTGW) and Peter Pan Goes Wrong (PPGW), namely:

The incompetent Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society (CPDS) are putting on a play, but everything that can go wrong, does.

However, TPTGW and PPGW are performed on stage; whereas this is part of a fictional show called Play of the Week, in which a new play is performed to a live audience and broadcast to the nation.

All six episodes are available on BBC iPlayer.

But why does that matter now? They made them in March 2019 and showed them in January 2020. Now it's May and we're not getting any more!

I'm glad you asked, person who is also me. Since the lockdown, Mischief hasn't been able to film any more proper material or be in their plays, but instead, they've invented the Goes Wrong Along, where cast members watch and react to the episodes, talking about their favourite moments and some behind the scenes facts. Some of the things you can learn are:
  • Who claps through the entire end credits
  • What horrifying thing Chris Leask (Trevor) only found out after filming
  • Which episode originally started with 2 1/2 minutes of solid fish puns
  • What was the most expensive prop they had to destroy
  • Which episode had to be filmed mostly without an audience
  • What actually went wrong
  • Which joke originally lasted four minutes longer
  • What BBC record TGWS set
  • Which costume Dave Hearn (Max) still owns
  • How Henry Lewis (Robert/writer) shocked a real-life cleaner at BBC Studios
  • What joke nearly made Charlie Russell (Sandra) corpse
Theatre Glossary

Corpsing (v.) - breaking out of character, usually by laughing. More info
  • Which episode relies heavily on props and sets from the other episodes
  • Which episode features "A Hitchcock" (Director Cameo)
  • What joke made Jonathan Sayer (Dennis/writer) "physically sick" in the writers' room
  • What deleted joke was filmed, but deemed 'too disturbing' to stay in
  • What made Henry Lewis 'livid'
  • The most dangerous part of the 'fan' sequence (clue: it wasn't the fan)
  • What the missing word in this sentence is: "No trousers ______ was hilarious"
  • Which gag was 'an accident'

Full Playlist (This is in order of release date by episode of TGWS, not release date of GWA, so some things said might be a bit odd out of context)

UPDATE:

A new episode of TGWS has been released, The Nativity Goes Wrong.

That episode does not have a GWA, but Peter Pan Goes Wrong does.
