Trapped with no entertainment? - Nay! The Shows Must Go On!
It may have come to your attention that basically the entire planet is in lockdown.
Let's start with the bad news. One of the first industries to go were theatres, due to lots of people congregating in small areas. Most of the West End in London shut down even before the government guidelines were introduced, so they couldn't even claim insurance to recoup their money. Fortunately, that is no longer the case, but they are still refunding tickets (If you have bought tickets to a West End show, look up online how tickets are being reimbursed - some are automatic, but some you have to directly request).
To clarify, this is most likely a worldwide problem, but I am only informed on the UK condition.
Cinemas have had the same trouble, but that's not what this blog post is about.
So here's the good news - theatres, writers, actors and directors of several west end shows are waiving their right to a fee for performances being shown online.
The National Theatre are putting some of their recorded live performances on YouTube, starting with One Man, Two Guv'nors, written by Richard Bean and starring James Corden. Hey, remember when I saw that and made some notes with a view to writing a blog post about it? Yeah, that failed. They are staying up for a while though, so although I can't confirm which ones are currently available, I can tell you which ones have been shown, all of which also have some clips, interviews and Behind The Scenes features (remember when we could just say BTS? That was so much easier).
National Theatre YouTube page
One Man, Two Guv'nors full show
Jane Eyre
Treasure Island
Twelfth Night
Frankenstein (Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternated playing The Doctor and The Creature and both versions are available to watch)
Andrew Lloyd Webber (henceforth ALW) has written and co-written a TONNE of musicals. List.
He is uploading versions of some of them to his new YouTube channel The Shows Must Go On, some movie versions, some arena tours and some theatre shows. Unfortunately, these are only on YouTube for 48 hours, being uploaded on Friday nights and taken down on Sundays; however they also have clips staying up of their best songs.
You have missed:
Joseph and the Unnecessarily Long Title (keep yourself amused with my review of the stage show)
Jesus Christ Superstar
Phantom of the Opera
Love Never Dies
Cats (1998)
This article is allegedly being updated regularly with the newest ALW shows going up, so you can see what's coming next.
