Christmas Quiz Rules 2019

As you will now have gathered, the theme this year is ANAGRAMS.

Every day you will be sent a clue at (hopefully) 11AM GMT which is an anagram of a Christmas movie. They start easy but they do get harder as the quiz goes on.

The hardest clue is

Trim a beach car’s soil bar

That clue was given out early due to the obscurity of the movie. It is currently worth 50 points to the first person who gets it and the points will decrease by 10 every week.

20 points will go to the first person to answer each question correctly, with the second receiving 10 points and the third receiving 5 points.

If no one has answered correctly by 4PM GMT, I will release another clue which will be another anagram of the same movie.

Some of the movie titles contain numbers (but they're not all sequels, what's that about?) Obviously, numbers do not work as anagrams, so they will be in written form, ie 2 will be written as TWO etc.


Clues do not always match up (translation - almost never match up), so sometimes (most of the time) they will have some leftover letters. These will be in brackets at the end of the clue.

I have tried to make the clues make sense, and some of them do (most don't) but most of them (some of them) make grammatical sense.

BREAKING NEWS

I have been informed that there is no point in doing a quiz with no prize, so this year the winner will have the opportunity to decide the theme for next year's quiz. The winner will be announced in early January and they will be contacted shortly after.

You may also be asked to fill in an optional survey after the quiz has finished so we can keep improving it.

Advice

I understand that some people find anagrams confusing and difficult, so here are some tips:

1. Look at the length. Usually (although not always), the clue will contain the same number of words as the answer. It will ALWAYS have the same number of letters though.

2. Remove Christmassy words. Most of the answers contain at least one Christmassy word, so if you find those letters, remove them from the clue and use what you have left to figure out the rest of the clue. Christmassy words include:

Christmas

Xmas

Snow

Santa
etc.

Beware though, some of these words are there to deliberately confuse you...

3. Look for unusual letters. Certain letters are relatively rare, so appearing in an anagram significantly narrows your options. What is a rare letter? Try looking for any Scrabble tile worth 4 or above.

4. Reverse engineering. Think of as many Christmas movies as you can and test them against the clue. This works best when used in conjunction with tip 3.

5. Cheat. DON'T use an anagram program, that's not in the spirit of the game and besides, it doesn't work half the time because of subtle things hidden in my clues.
